Product Information

Fibersart® high flow hollow-fiber modules contain asymmetrical Fibersart® high flow membranes. The consequently high mechanical stability of the Fibersart® high flow modules allows them to be used wherever high packing density is required and special standards of cleanliness are demanded. The inner diameter of the fibers is 1.2 mm and the module has an area of 12.5 m2. Fibersart® high flow hollow-fiber modules have proved especially effective in filtering wine. Especially in the case of systems with large membrane areas, their modular design makes them a cost-effective system component.

Module type

The hollow-fiber module is operated in the in-out mode. The feed enters the module and part of the flow passes through the hollow fibers before leaving the module in concentrated form. The permeate penetrates the membranes and flows out of the module through the permeate connections at zero pressure.

The permeate outlets of the standard module housing are situated on the same side. This housing layout can be altered and alternative housings can also be supplied. Please contact Technical Support at Sartorius Stedim Biotech GmbH in this regard.

  • Connections for feed and concentrate: threaded beverage connector, DN65
  • Connections for permeate: sanitary connector, DN25

Membrane material

Polyether sulfone has high chemical stability and is most commonly used to filter wine. Its high chemical stability allows the membranes to be used in nearly all water treatment applications.

Delivered Condition

Before the modules are delivered, they undergo extensive quality tests, which cover the following steps:

1. Integrity test of the hollow-fiber modules

2. Test of the flow rate for water

3. External dimensions check

4. Check of outward appearance

5. Airtightness test

All quality criteria must be met before delivery can be approved.

The module is delivered in the following condition:

The hollow-fiber module is dried down to constant weight and delivered in a dry state. The module can be spontaneously wetted with water. The module is sealed in a tubular film and packaged in a cardboard box.

Chemical, Thermal and Mechanical Stability

The mechanical stability of hollow fibers varies according to the temperature.

The fully automated filtration system prevents the occurrence of sudden flow-rate or pressure changes and thus offers greater protection against extreme service conditions caused by faulty valve action.

A cooling-down shock can damage the membranes. The fully automated system therefore lowers the temperature gradually after hot-water cleaning.

Long-term Storage of the Module

No matter if the module is stored separately or remains part of the hollowfiber system, the membrane requires preservation. You should therefore clean the module thoroughly and leave it in wet condition. Then fill the module with one of the following preservative agents to prevent microbial growth during storage.

Sodium bisulfite (NaHSO3): 1% (only suitable for storage outside the hollow-fiber system)

Sodium hydroxide (NaOH): 2%

Storage up to 1 week:

Citric or phosphoric acid at pH2 (2%)

Storage in the hollow-fiber system:

Fully automated systems ensure that the preservative agent completely fills the permeate and concentrate chambers and all air is forced out of the module. Switch the system off afterwards.

Storage outside the hollow-fiber system:

The module should be stored in an airtight, caustic-resistant container. The module should be filled with a preservative agent until the permeate and concentrate chambers are completely filled and no air remains inside. Then close the plastic bag or caustic-resistant container airtight and store the module in a horizontal position and in the dark at a temperature of 5°C to 30°C.

Precautions for use

Handling Fibersart® High Flow Hollow-fiber Modules

Protection against direct sunlight and other UV sources

The module should not be continuously exposed to direct sunlight or other UV sources (e.g. UV lamps for disinfection). It should be stored in the dark.

Anti-freeze protection

Once the module has been wetted, it must be protected against below-zero temperatures while in operation or storage. If the module is allowed to freeze, its membranes are liable to be irreversibly damaged.

Caution during transport

Severe jolts, such as falling or collisions, can cause breakage in the module. It should therefore be transported and handled with care.

Returning the module

Before returning a module, please contact Technical Support at Sartorius. Prepare the module as if for long-term storage. Send it securely packaged to Sartorius. Please include a written damage report with a return shipment form.
